Faces of Mass Incarceration

Putting a human face on the people most affected by incarceration.

Who are the real people shamed and stigmatized by mass incarceration? Faces of Mass Incarceration looks beyond statistics and stereotypes to the prison families whose lives are directly affected by incarceration.

Filmed in Dallas, Texas, the documentary was created to challenge fear, reduce harmful stereotypes, and increase understanding of a population too often misunderstood, maligned, or pushed to the margins.

2018 DOCUMENTARY

A film centered on prison families, stigma, stereotypes, and the human impact of mass incarceration.

ABOUT THE FILM

Who are the people behind mass incarceration?

The Faces of Mass Incarceration documentary asks audiences to look beyond statistics, labels, and fear to see the real people whose lives have been directly affected by incarceration.

At the center of the film are prison families — a population that is often misunderstood, stigmatized, and judged because of the incarceration of someone they love.

By putting faces and lived experiences behind the issue, the documentary challenges harmful stereotypes and unnecessary fears surrounding people who are too often maligned, shunned, or reduced to assumptions about the criminal justice system.

Greater understanding begins when people are no longer treated as statistics or labels.

The project was also designed as an educational and advocacy resource. Together with an accompanying Facilitator’s Guide, the film can support classroom discussion, community conversations, advocacy work, and other settings where audiences are examining incarceration, stigma, families, and social justice.
