REFRAMED

Stories. Ideas. New perspectives.

Article submissions

Have an article ready to share—or a story worth developing?

Reframed Magazine welcomes original article submissions and story ideas from individuals, filmmakers, and organizations. We explore criminal justice, second chances, identity, creativity, and the experiences that shape our lives.

Send a finished piece for consideration, or introduce an idea you’d like us to explore. You don’t need to be a professional writer to suggest a story.

We’re rooted in Portland/Vancouver, WA, and welcome perspectives from beyond the Pacific Northwest. Submissions are reviewed for editorial fit; publication isn’t guaranteed.

Our editorial interests

What we’re looking for

We welcome article submissions that bring a human perspective to the issues, experiences, and creative work around us. Personal essays, interviews, researched features, and community profiles all have a place in REFRAMED.

Criminal Justice and Second Chances

Personal experiences, family perspectives, reentry, and thoughtful examinations of how justice affects people and communities. We’re interested in the questions, challenges, and possibilities that deserve a closer look.

Identity, Belonging, and Change

Stories about starting over, navigating major life changes, challenging labels, and finding connection. We welcome personal reflections and research-informed articles that help readers understand themselves and one another.

Film, Art, and Creativity

Meet the filmmakers, artists, and creative communities shaping Portland, Vancouver, and the Pacific Northwest. We welcome stories about their work, what inspires it, and how it connects with the world around them.

People Making a Difference

Individuals and organizations doing meaningful work, told through specific experiences, challenges, and community contributions. Show us the people behind a project and what their work means to those involved.

What makes a strong submission?

Honest experiences, thoughtful questions, and specific details give readers something to consider. You don’t need an extraordinary success story—uncertainty, setbacks, and work still in progress belong here, too.

  • Submit your own work and credit sources, quotations, and photographs.
  • Support factual claims with reliable references where appropriate.
  • Tell us if your article has been published elsewhere.
  • Focus on a story or perspective rather than a promotional announcement.

What would you like to submit?

You might have a finished piece or just the beginning of an idea. Either way, we’d like to hear what you have in mind.

A finished article

Already have something written? Submit your original article, essay, or personal story for consideration in a future issue of Reframed Magazine.

What to have ready Your draft, a short summary, and a little about yourself. Please let us know if the piece has appeared elsewhere.

Submit an article

A story idea

Know a person, project, or experience that deserves a closer look? Tell us about it. You can suggest your own story or introduce someone we should meet.

What to have ready A brief description, why you think it matters, and how we can reach you. No finished article or writing experience needed.

What happens next?

Our editor will review your submission and may contact you with questions or discuss developing it for a future issue. Submitting an article or idea doesn’t guarantee publication.

Why REFRAMED Magazine?

There’s more to understand when we look closer.

Portrait of a man

Personal stories, film, art, and conversations about justice can each change how we understand another person’s life. REFRAMED brings those perspectives together.

A filmmaker might challenge a familiar assumption. An artist might express something difficult to put into words. Someone rebuilding after incarceration—or a family living through it—might offer a perspective readers haven’t encountered.

Through interviews, features, and article submissions, we create space for individuals, families, artists, and community organizations to share their experiences. Readers can discover meaningful work, question first impressions, and connect with lives different from their own.

Rooted in Portland, Vancouver, WA, and the Pacific Northwest, REFRAMED aims to make room for complexity, creativity, and people whose lives deserve a closer look.
